The Beauty of String and Bistro Lighting

String lighting, also known as bistro lighting, is essentially Christmas lights but instead of hung around a tree they’re hung delicately indoors or outdoors to increase the ambiance of the area. They can be called bistro lights because string lighting is commonly seen hung horizontally above an outdoor dining area in small bistros or café’s, thus the name was born. While string lights are seen more in bistros and restaurants, many homeowners are starting to adopt the string lighting look to increase the ambiance of their porch or outdoor sitting area.

String Lights

While we had mentioned that string lights are similar to Christmas lights, this is true to an extent. The lights are all attached and spread apart but while Christmas lights have smaller bulbs, most string lights have much larger bulbs. String lights usually have rounded globe lights that give off a beautiful soothing illumination. The bulbs are specifically made to be outside and are made of commercial grade material to withstand exposure to the elements. Strings lights can be sold at various chord lengths to accommodate different size areas.

Increase Ambiance with String Lighting

Installing string lighting is an excellent way to increase the ambiance of your back deck or patio, why do you think bistros do it? The beautiful array of string lights above creates a stunningly relaxing environment and can leave your guests breathless. String lights can be used to surround a patio and create a perimeter of lights or they can be hung above the sitting area shining down. Either way, your backyard sitting area will have the ambiance of a small Italian bistro and your guests will be in awe of your lovely string lighting design!

“Bill Knowles has done three landscape lighting proposals for me, two of which I had him install (15-25 fixtures each). Bill is very knowledgable about landscape lighting products. He recommends fixtures that are durable and long lasting. He has the experience to know where best to position light fixtures and how to properly wire them. He is confident in his approach but easy going about listening to owner input. His proposals were clear and detailed with product cut sheets provided. He does not usually provide any drawings locating the lighting on a landscape plan, however, if there were a Landscape Architect involved I assume they would provide that service. As an Architectural Designer myself I was particularly interested in the aesthetics of the lighting, not just their function. Bill delivered two great looking projects. As for the warranty it is very generous. After installation Bill returned to adjust light levels (with lower wattage bulbs), make adjustments to the timers, and replace any faulty bulbs at no charge.”
